Rock on! Exorcistic: The Rock Musical is returning Off Broadway starring Emma Hunton — of Freeform's Good Trouble — at The Asylum NYC for a limited engagement from Aug. 25 to Nov. 22.
It will feature a rotating cast of celebrity special guests each week, including Lance Bass, Jaime Cepero, Nicci Claspell, Garrett Clayton, Brian Logan Dales, Deanna Giulietti, Frankie Grande, Lena Hall, Ali Kresch, Charlene Incarnate, Lindsay Heather Pearce, Steven Taylor, Sophia Urista, Kirsten Vangsness, Nina West, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Evan Rachel Wood, and more.
Alongside Hunton, the regular company includes Ethan Crystal, Jesse Merlin, Steven Cutts, Michael Shaw Fisher, Leigh Wulff, Jaime Lyn Beatty, Richardson Cisneros-Jones and Hannah Bonnett.
Written by Michael Shaw Fisher, Exorcist: The Rock Musical is a high-octane horror-comedy that premiered Off-Off Broadway last year. It is a self-aware parody that follows a theatre company planning to put on a parody of The Exorcist from stage reading to Broadway. As their quest for fame and money supersedes their art and humanity, they ensure their lead actress, Hunton, gets possessed in the process.
The show won the LA Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Music and Lyrics in 2023. It will be directed by Chadd McMillan and Alli Miller-Fisher and feature Choreography by Camal Pugh. The creative team also includes music director Zach Spound, lighting designer Marciel Greene, prop designer Kelly Stavert, costume designer Chadd McMillan, and intimacy director Rebecca Reaney.
Exorcistic: The Rock Musical is in performances from Aug. 25 to Nov. 22 at The Asylum NYC on East 24th Street. For tickets and more information, visit here.

“Sing us a song!” Yellow Sound Label has announced the release of The Billy Joel Project, the debut album from The Broadway Ensemble. The full album will be released on Aug. 1, with physical CDs available on Sept. 26. Pre-orders are available here.
The Broadway Ensemble features an 11-member cast with a combined 48 Broadway credits. This new project features an intimate look at the iconic piano man’s songbook. The album will feature new interpretations that honor the original classics like “New York State of Mind,” “Only the Good Die Young,” as well as deeper cuts like “Where’s the Orchestra?” and Joel’s latest single “Turn The Lights Back On.”
Theatrely has an exclusive first listen to Nicholas Edwards singing This is the Time from Joel’s 1986 album The Bridge.
In addition to Edwards, the album features Farah Alvin, John Treacy Egan, Annie Golden, Lina Koutrakos, Aaron Ramey, Nicholas Rodriguez, Courter Simmons, Rachel Ulanet, Donna Vivino, and Michael Winther. Music direction is by Jeremy Robin Lyons. The album is produced by Phil Geoffrey Bond, who also produced Sondheim Unplugged.
“Billy Joel is more than a musical genius —he’s a master storyteller,” Bond said in a statement. “His ability to weave powerful, profound, and deeply human narratives makes his music a perfect match for The Broadway Ensemble.”

Liberation is coming to Broadway this fall. The original play, which won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble during its premier at Roundabout Theatre Company earlier this year, will begin performances at the James Earl Jones Theatre on Oct. 8. It will play a strictly limited 14-week engagement.
Tickets go on sale on Aug. 11 via Telecharge.
Liberation is written by Bess Wohl and directed by Whitney White. It takes place in the basement of an Ohio Y in the 1970s, where a group of women meet for their weekly consciousness-raising group. They find a new wave of feminism taking hold around them. While their candid conversations unfold with humor, heart, and vulnerability, the play explores how everyday moments spark lasting change.
“Bringing Liberation to Broadway is, quite literally, a dream come true for me,” playwright Bess Wohl said in a statement. “This play has lived in my heart for a very long time, and I’m beyond thrilled to continue its journey with this fantastic team at this moment. I can’t wait to share it with Broadway audiences.”
The cast and creative team for the play will be announced soon.
Wohl has previously written Grand Horizons, which earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. Her other works include Camp Siegfried, Make Believe, Continuity, Small Mouth Sounds, American Hero, Barcelona, Touched, In, and Cats Talk Back. She also recently made her feature film debut with Baby Rudy, which was released by Magnolia Pictures in early 2023.
White recently directed Jaja’s African Hair Braiding on Broadway, and has worked on The Secret Life of Bees at The Almeida, Walden at Second Stage, Jordans at the PUblic Theatre, and On Sugarland, which earned her a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Direction.
Liberation begins its 14-week engagement at the James Earl Jones Theatre on West 48th Street in New York City on Oct. 8. For tickets and more information, visit here.
